In this last part of our Hair and Hair Loss Treatment series, we'll discuss other causes of hair loss and treatments aside from surgical and medical (drug) treatments.
A few weeks ago, we discussed at length that Low Light Laser Therapy (LLLT) effectively treats hair loss. And just recently, we announced that have greatly improved our LLLT caps with a new design to make them more comfortable.
Aside from genetics, there are other things that can cause or at least contribute to hair loss. Illness is one. There are several illnesses including autoimmune disorders like Lupus or a skin infection like Ringworm that can cause hair loss. Occasionally a type of cancer called Hodgkin’s Disease can present as hair loss. Thyroid problems, especially hypothyroidism can manifest itself as hair loss.
There are several vitamins that contribute to hair loss either from having a deficiency or having too much of them. Not having enough iron can play a role in hair loss just like having too much Vitamin A can cause hair loss (and a host of other problems.)
Stress can play a role in hair loss and can contribute to other health problems in ways that are not well understood. If you are experiencing hair loss, are you under a lot of stress? Is there anything you can do to alleviate some of the stress in your life?
Before starting all kinds of hair loss treatments, it’s useful to have a good discussion with your family doctor. Have you had a check-up lately? Do you eat a balanced diet? Are you taking handfuls of supplementary vitamins? It’s possible that eating better and coping with stress better like with daily meditation can help your hair loss treatment.
Sometimes several different treatments can be used in combination to treat your hair loss. Please discuss this with your doctor first, but sometimes people use an oral or topical medication and Low Light Laser Therapy. Or some patients have surgery and use an oral medication. Some patients can combine surgery with Low Light Laser Therapy. There are as many different possibilities and combinations as there are grains of sand on a beach.
Keep in mind that there are always new drugs around the corner, and new research will open more options for the treatment of hair loss. We will keep you posted on any new developments.
