How To Protect Your Scalp and Avoid Hair Loss in Summer Time

The first day of summer is Thursday, June 21, 2018. When summer rolls around, we always get many of the same questions, so let’s take a moment and address them here:

1. Will chlorinated pool water make my hair fall out?

No, it will not. There is no relationship between swimming in a chlorinated pool and hair loss. However, swimming in chlorinated pool water can dry out your skin and your scalp and make hair more brittle. So, be sure to use a good conditioner regularly. Here’s one that we recommend.

Please note that swimming in a pool can cause your hair to turn green, but it’s not from any chlorination. Hair turns green from the presence of certain metals in the water, namely, copper, manganese, and iron.

2. Will using a sunscreen on my scalp make my hair fall out?

Goodness, no! A sunscreen is a great way to protect your scalp and any other exposed skin areas. Definitely, use lots of sunscreen.

3. Will wearing a hat on my head make my hair fall out?

Definitely not. There is no correlation between wearing hats and hair loss. There is, however, a type of hair loss called Tension (or Traction) Alopecia, that is caused by hairstyles that are very tight and severe and pulling on your hair follicles. It is seen most commonly in female fashion models. As long as your hair is loose under your hat, then you’re not in any danger.

4. I want to go on a diet to fit into my bathing suit. Will the diet make my hair loss worse?

We talked about this a little bit earlier in the year. Your hair follicles like the rest of your body need calories, vitamins, and minerals to function effectively. So, if you’re going to diet, please don’t crash diet. Go slowly and make sure you’re getting enough nutrients.

Remember, anyone, experiencing sudden or significant hair loss should see his or her family doctor. We would recommend blood work to see the levels of different hormones and whether you have any vitamin deficiencies. We are here for you when you’re ready to start treatment for hair loss.
