Hormones and Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL)

Hormones are special types of molecules in the body that have the role of signaling other molecules. There are tons of different hormones that influence most body functions including metabolism, fertility, mood, sleep, and growth to name but a few.

For most things to work properly in the body, several hormones may work together or even at odds with each other. The important point here is that hormones are in and need to stay in a delicate balance..

So, it’s no surprise that hormones can have a significant (and devastating) effect on hair loss in women as well as men. We know that dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone, is one of the main culprits behind male pattern hair loss. Even though women have much less testosterone than men, women still have some testosterone, and DHT can also be a factor in female pattern hair loss, too.

In What Ways Can Hormones Affect Female Pattern Hair Loss

There are more ways than have likely been identified, but here are some that we know about.

  1. We know that not enough thyroid hormones can cause hair loss.
  2. Too much testosterone in a woman, for example in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Because too much testosterone can lead to too much DHT.
  3. Not enough estrogen. If there’s not enough estrogen, then the balance between estrogen and testosterone is thrown off.
  4. Too many added androgens, for example, in birth control pills or a contraceptive implant. Sometimes added progestin is enough to throw off your hormonal balance.

There is considerable research being done in this area right now. Try to keep in mind that there are usually several factors at play with hair loss. Hair loss and DHT is not a simple cause and effect scenario, and it is not fully understood. There are your genetics, your diet, your environment, and your levels of different vitamins, too, that are also playing a role. Hormones, however, are a big piece of the puzzle and one not to be ignored.
