Time passes far too quickly. One minute, you're scoring the winning touchdown at the championship football game. The next, you barely recognize the person in the mirror. Even if you’re fortunate enough to age gracefully with few wrinkles, most men and women experience some form of hair loss in their lifetime. Fortunately, people with hair loss have more than one option when it comes...
For many of us, this is the time of year when you want to look your best. And hair loss can be hard on your self-esteem. Even if you’ve started treatment—and we know that Low-Level Light (Laser) Therapy with laser caps (LLLT) works—it takes time to see the results. But there are some things that you can do to cope with thinning hair immediately....
Today we’ll explore medicinal (non-surgical) treatment options. To date, there are basically four drugs that are commonly used to treat hair loss: minoxidil, finasteride, dutasteride, and corticosteroids. We will look briefly at them one by one. Minoxidil Minoxidil, the generic name of the drug commonly known as Rogaine, has been around since the mid-1970’s. In a previous article, we discussed it at length. The...
You may think you’re alone in the struggle to achieve thicker hair, but the statistics show otherwise. By age 35, two-thirds of American men experience some degree of hair loss that worsens with time.¹ Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) typically manifests later in life, affecting nearly half of women in the United States by the time they reach 50-years-old. While prevalent, treating hair loss...
Before getting into how we can help you to replace hair that is lost, we couldn’t resist telling you a little about hair color because it’s such a fascinating topic. Hair color is determined by melanin, a naturally occurring pigment found in our bodies. Melanin in hair is produced by two different kinds of melanin-producing cells called melanocytes. The two different types of pigment...
Humans have two kinds of hair: terminal hair and vellus hair. Terminal hair is the thicker hair that grows on your scalp and vellus hair is the very fine short hair found on most other parts of the body. Although there is technically a third type called lanugo, these colorless fine hairs are only found on fetuses and normally shed before birth. The terminal...
You lose your hair for many reasons, and not all of them are well understood. Genetics play a significant role in when you start to lose your hair and the pattern of baldness. Hormones play a role, and specifically the presence of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Time is important, too. The older you get, the more likely you will experience some hair loss. Even if you...
Styling your hair is fun, but did you know there are a number of potentially damaging hair pieces out there? Traction alopecia is a form of localized hair loss caused by excessive or aggressive pulling at the roots. Patients who suffer from traction alopecia often wear tight hairstyles that put tension on the follicle, causing the hair to release from the follicle. The best...
Maybe you’ve heard of Low Light Laser Therapy. LLLT is an emerging science, and research is currently underway to explore its usefulness for a variety of medical issues including joint pain, skin problems, and veterinary medicine. The full extent of the benefits of LLLT is not yet known, but there is clear evidence that LLLT can stimulate, inhibit, or modulate a number of cellular...
This is a much higher percentage of men with significant hair loss than women (the ratio is like 2:1 respectively) and as a result, there are more products on the market that are approved for male-pattern hair loss than for female-pattern hair loss. Nevertheless, there are lots of effective hair growth products for women. So, let’s take a look at some of them. Laser...
