Hair Growth Products for Women

This is a much higher percentage of men with significant hair loss than women (the ratio is like 2:1 respectively) and as a result, there are more products on the market that are approved for male-pattern hair loss than for female-pattern hair loss.

Nevertheless, there are lots of effective hair growth products for women. So, let’s take a look at some of them.

Laser Caps: Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) works. And it works as well for women as for men. It’s painless, non-invasive, and our caps are designed to go everywhere and be comfortable and unobtrusive in public.

Minoxidil 2% Cream: Minoxidil is the only other FDA-approved treatment for female pattern hair loss, although there are some other medicines used off-label for this purpose. This cream was originally an oral medication used to treat high-blood pressure. How it helps hair growth is not well understood, but Minoxidil seems to stimulate the hair follicle to move into the anagen or growth phase.

Androgen Blockers: Women can have a genetic predisposition to an androgen hormone-related hair loss because women have male hormones or androgens just like men. And there are several oral drugs prescribed off-label for women to treat hair loss. Drugs like cimetidine or finasteride, for example, interfere with androgen pathways like the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp, which causes miniaturization of and damage to the hair follicle.

Tagamet/cimetidine has significant anti-androgen properties even though the drug was originally marketed for the treatment of stomach ulcers.

Finasteride/Propecia is also an anti-androgen, and it’s a drug that was originally designed to treat prostate cancer. The biggest issue with finasteride is that it can cause birth defects, so, it must be used with extreme caution by women of child-bearing age.

Sometimes something as simple as changing away from a combination birth control pill (that contains both estrogen and progesterone) can significantly help androgen-related female pattern hair loss. Or just a prescription for estrogen can sometimes help because the problem is not just the amount of androgen in the body but also the balance between androgen and estrogen.

Shampoo that helps hair growth: Our shampoo has DHT blockers in it. That means that every time you wash your hair, you’re doing your scalp some good and protecting your hair follicles.
