Fall and winter is upon us in the US, and with these seasons come cold temperatures, wind, rain, snow, and static electricity. Here are some tips for coping with the cold weather and keeping your hair looking fabulous.
- Conditioner. Be sure to include some conditioner in the winter to your hair care routine. Cold winds and interior heating can be very drying on the hair. A good conditioner can make a big difference in how your hair looks on a daily basis.
- Static electricity. Everyone knows that static electricity is worse in the winter. This is because air, especially dry air, is a good insulator, so the static charge you pick up cannot be discharged easily. And you’ll notice this static electricity often in your hair. How can you combat this? There are a few ways. One is to make the air less dry in your home or office. A humidifier or an aquarium or a plant sitting on a tray of pebbles with water will all add humidity to the air. Also, shoes that are good insulators like sneakers make the problem worse. If you wear leather shoes or go around in your socks, you can discharge the static electricity more efficiently. Regarding your hair, try adding a smoothing oil or comb some hairspray through your hair. The drier your hair is, the worse the problem will be. Use conditioner. Lots. See #1.
- Rain and snow. If the rain and snow make a mess of your hair, then wear a hat or a hood or use an umbrella. Hats can be very glamorous. Keep a comb or brush and some extra hairspray in your purse or at work.
- A hair trim. Fall and winter is an excellent time for a hair trim. It’s much easier to get your hair back in place from the elements outside if the hair is well cut. A good cut can hide a multitude of sins and make winter much more manageable.
While you’re battling the elements, don’t forget that some hair shedding in the fall is natural, and make sure you’re getting enough vitamin D.
