Preventing Hair Loss With Proper Hair Care

We mentioned last time that hair loss is not uncommon and that by the age of 40, two-thirds of men and 40 percent of women have some noticeable hair loss. While most types of hair loss have a hereditary component, there are nonetheless lots of things you can do to help prevent hair loss with proper hair care.

Scalp massage: Start giving yourself a once or twice a week gentle scalp massage when you’re in the shower. There is some real research showing that a scalp massage can increase hair growth and stimulate hair follicles.

Hairstyle: Never wear a hairstyle that pulls your hair hard and severely in any direction. This is something that contributes to tension or traction alopecia, hair loss caused by hard traction on the hair.

Get help for hair loss in the beginning: Proper hair care means getting help for hair loss when it’s starting. It’s much easier to treat hair loss when the hair is first starting to thin or the hair follicles first starting to shrink than it is when all the hair and hair follicles have disappeared from an area. Caring for your hair means paying attention to your hair and recognizing if you see any changes in it.

Use the right hair products: Help yourself by using a shampoo that doesn’t have sulfates—which damage hair—but does have dihydrotestosterone (DHT) blockers. Too much DHT in the scalp contributes to hair loss.

Proper self-care: The last thing we suggest for proper hair care is proper body care. By that we mean, eating well, reducing stress where possible, getting enough sleep, and getting some exercise. Everything that helps your body in general, also helps your scalp and the hair follicles nourished within it.

It’s not difficult to take some steps to prevent hair loss. Our tips listed above are all small steps, but together, they can make a difference with your hair growth.
