5 Simple Ways to Keep Your Scalp Healthy

Hair is formed inside hair follicles under the skin of your scalp. So, if you want healthy hair, you need to start by having healthy hair follicles. Here are some simple things you can do to improve the health of your scalp and your hair follicles.

1. Try To Keep Stress Levels Down.

We know that stress can precipitate hair loss. So, try as best you can to relieve your stress. There are all kinds of ways to relieve stress. Exercise is one way. The exercise doesn’t have to be sophisticated or expensive. Going for a walk every evening can help you shed the days’ worries. Meditation is another way to lower stress levels. There are lots of books and YouTube (free) videos on mindfulness meditation, which is particularly easy to learn. Positive thinking can also relieve stress. Making an effort to drown out negative thoughts can give you peace of mind. If you find you are ruminating over negative ideas, replace those loops by repeating something positive like, “I love myself.” We’re not kidding.

2. Get Enough Sleep.

Sleep is something that most people don’t get enough of. And yet sleep is when your body restores its muscular and skeletal systems, and it’s also when all kinds of cell growth are happening. If you want your body to function at an optimum level including your hair follicles, then you have to get enough sleep.

In order to improve your sleep patterns, you may need to improve what’s called sleep hygiene. That means going to bed at the same time every night, limiting daytime naps, limiting evening stimulants like caffeine, and limiting foods that tend to give indigestion, among other things.

3. Give Yourself a Regular Scalp Massage

A while ago, we talked about this in detail, but believe it or not, a scalp massage is good for your hair follicles. We don’t know exactly why, but a scalp massage seems to nourish hair follicles. Maybe it’s the increased blood flow in the scalp.

Just give your scalp a gentle massage for a few minutes when you’re in the shower and your hair is slick with conditioner.

4. Get Enough Calories and Protein

Being overweight has its own set of problem, but being underweight or not getting enough protein and calories is definitely bad for your hair follicles. Nutrition is obviously important for all body processes, and your hair is no exception.

5. Make Sure You’re Eating a Healthy Diet

Aside from getting enough protein and calories, it’s important to be getting enough vitamins and trace minerals. Your best bet is to eat a variety of colorful foods, and the less processed they are, the better. And don’t forget to include some pumpkin and pumpkin seeds in your diet if at all possible.

Remember, anyone, experiencing sudden or significant hair loss should see his or her family doctor. We would recommend blood work to see the levels of different hormones and whether you have any vitamin deficiencies. We are here for you when you’re ready to start treatment for hair loss.
