Everyone loses hair. It happens during your morning shower, while you're blowing it dry, or when you give it a quick brush—and that's normal. Hair shedding often stops on its own. It's normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day. When the body sheds significantly more hairs every day, a person has excessive hair shedding.
Some people are not sure if they are losing too much hair. Here are few ways to get a good idea if you are having significant hair loss.
Obvious Signs
The most obvious sign is if you’re seeing a lot of hair where you shouldn’t be. Do you see more than one or two strands of hair on your pillow? Are you seeing lots of hair in your shower drain? This is the first sign that something is not right with your hair.
Male Pattern Hair Loss vs. Female Pattern Hair Loss
If you’re a man, then look in the mirror at your temples and the hairline above your forehead. Does the hair appear to be receding? Look at the top of your head. Do you have a thinning round patch? These are the typical signs of beginning male pattern hair loss (MPHL).
Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) occurs in a more general diffuse manner. Do you feel like you’re seeing more scalp than you used to? Does your bun feel smaller than it used to? This is how female pattern hair loss starts.
Before and After Photos
If you’re still not sure, look at some photos of yourself from 10 or 20 years ago next to some recent photos. Do you see a significant difference? If you’re not sure, then ask a friend or loved one to look for you. Sometimes this is the only way you will notice a slight or subtle change.
Consider Your Lifestyle
Don’t panic. Are there other unusual reasons why you might be losing your hair? Have you started or stopped a medication? Have you had any recent major stresses in your life? Have you recently been on a crash diet? There might be a simple explanation for recent hair loss other than aging.
