Grooming Habits to Prevent Thinning Hair

Some grooming habits are particularly hard on your hair. Fortunately, there are a few simple things you can do to protect your hair. Let’s take a look at easy everyday ways to protect your hair from thinning.

Hair Style

There is a special type of alopecia (or hair loss) called Tension Alopecia that results from pulling your hair in a certain direction. Avoiding wearing your hair tightly pulled in any direction prevents this type of hair loss. Keep in mind, we’re not talking about wearing your hair like this once—we’re talking about people who pull their hair back tightly day in and day out.

Use a Conditioner

Remember, hair is dead. As hair strands get older, and suffer from regular wear and tear, the outer cuticle layer of your hair starts to look frayed (under a microscope). The more worn out the cuticle layer is, the more easily the tender hair underneath it can break. When you use conditioner, you are binding certain products to the cuticle layer making it smoother. This not only protects the fragile hair under the cuticle layer, but it makes your hair look better too: smooth and shiny. It’s a win-win situation.

Protect Your Hair in the Pool

Whether a swimming pool is chlorinated or salt water, there’s no doubt that the pool water is hard on your hair. Pool water dries out your hair. The drier your hair gets, the more fragile it is, and the more prone you will be to breakage.

If possible wear a bathing cap, so your hair isn’t freely bathing in pool water. Some people recommend putting a lot of conditioner on your hair before putting the cap on. That’s an even better protection.

Wear Loosely-Fitting Hats

If you wear hats that are tight on your head, you can experience the same problem as with tension alopecia. Wear hats that fit loosely and don’t pull the hair in any particular direction.

Use Warm Water Instead of Hot

Yes, it’s true. Very hot water isn’t good for your hair. Warm water is kinder to the hair cuticle, especially as we age.

There are plenty of habits we can get away with for a while or when we’re young, but if you want your hair to look good in 10 or 20 years, then start protecting it today.
